WHY TYPEWRITERS?
Why do I collect antique and unique typewriters?
Look at
those
machines. How could you NOT love them?
The biggest reason I collect antique typewriters is that as a lifelong
newspaperman, the old typewriters are a link with my professional past.
The craftsmanship that went into the old machines reminds me of the
craftsmanship
that went into the work of my predecessors in newspapers; and that
should
go into my work today.
These are the machines the early newsmen used
as they perfected our craft. It's the details that makes a good
newspaper,
and it was the care to details that make the old typewriters special.
Look at an old machine. Check out the intricate decals; look at the
careful
pin striping; the fine woodwork; check the nickel plating; the brass,
the glossy finish; the unique, one-of-a-kind designs, the pure
esthetics.
It's something that, as we sit at our putty-grey computers (OK, mine os
Bondi Blue...), is often absent
today. The care and craftsmanship that went into these old machines is
a statement of pride by the maker and the buyer.
So why do I collect antique and unique typewriters? It's fun!
