Hi. I'm Jack Tanner
Welcome to my Web page on collecting

AUT

When I'm not working as a sports page designer for the Naples News, I spend altogether too much time indulging my passion for collecting, repairing and restoring antique and unique typewriters. Here's a brief look at collecting antique typewriters, a peek at a  small part of my collection and why you should treat these incredible machines with respect.

PERSONAL STUFF
I'm a newspaper page designer and copy editor, a profession that I've work
ed at for nearly 20 years, which is a long time in the
Jack07
newspaper business. (I've actually
been in the newspaper business since the late '60s.) Since I'm a page designer, I'm naturally interested in design, specifically newspaper design, which means I read a lot of papers and visit a lot of web sites. If you're interested in design, a site I recommend is The Society of News Design . It contains some good information for news (and Web) designers. It also contains the occasional job listing. On my Media Links page are some other newspaper sites to check out, if that's your thing. Another really  good site is Newspaper Design: Design with Reason (this site has been undergoing lots of changes lately, so it may or may no be there when you look for it). There's a lot of good information there, plus links to images of a lot of daily newspaper Page 1s. There's also a link to Mario Garcia's pages there (garcia.media) . He's the current guru of newspaper design and just completed the color redesign of the Wall Street Journal. Classy bit of work. It's worth a trip, too. Also, I recommend checking out The Newseum. Great site. Usually has nearly 300 PDFs of that day's A1s from around the country and the world. Fun site.  I also have been posting a few of my pages at newspagedesigner.com. The Naples Daily News, my employer (a Scripps paper), is doing some very innovative things with news and the  Web, integrating the newspaper, the Web, TV news, cable access channels, podcasts and vodcasts together to create a complete, immediate news-gathering and disseminating organization. We've become the source for news in Southwest Florida, no matter how you want to get that news. Don't know yet of it's all gonna work, but it's an interesting experiment and fun to be a part of.

I've worked at various newspapers and magazines in Montana, Wisconsin, Arizona, Illinois and now Florida as a sports reporter, sports columnist, sports slot chief and sports editor, a news reporter, news columnist, copy editor and editor, as an editorial writer, a features editor, a slot chief, managing editor and as a magazine editor. I've got some miles on me. It shows.

Ellen with Quilt
MY WIFE

On a more personal note, I live in Naples, FL  and am married to my best friend, the kind, beautiful and patient Ellen, a children's librarian, an artist, storyteller and a quilter extraordinaire. She works as a children's librarian at the Marco Island library. Did I mention she's patient? And beautiful? Before we moved in November '06, she'd been quite active in the Illini Country Stitchers Quilt Guild, a pretty eclectic bunch of women brought together by a love of quilting (and fabric shopping). She's now exploring a similar quilt guild here in Florida. We've been happily married since September 1992.
